I believe REDD will not come to fruition at the Copenhagen Meet. This is because REDD is being pushed for economic benefits, and not social or environmental benefits. Environmental NGOs and others know what is behind the World Bank and Kevin Conrad's mind so they will disagree on many things and push for more time to get the REDD texts and other things right.

REDD was initially devised with economic benefits in mind, so it will always meet opposition from environmental NGOs. Had it been developed with social, economic and environmental benefits in mind in the first place, we would not be facing all these problems. Things would have flowed smoothly to address an environmental problem that threatens life on this planet.

Remember that human beings are different from all animal species. We can reason, rationalize and read between lines, so what one does or proposes is put through these processes by other human beings. And if something is not right, there will always be opposition. Animals cannot do that; they cannot reason, rationalize and read between lines. And that is exactly what is happening with the REDD debate.

So the solution is simple. Put some honesty into the whole thing and lets get on with it. Time is running out on us for mitigating global warming. The more we argue on how to do REDD and others to mitigate global warming, global temperatures are going up as a result of more green house gas emissions into the atmosphere.

As the issue on the table is extremely diverse , it would be extremely difficult to come up with agreement that will serve the interest of all the parties. One alternative approach might be to try regional and sub regional models that are suitable for the respective regions. The Global environment outlook report of UNEP has shown this fact very clearly. The status, drivers, pressure and impact of our global commons are heterogeneous. Negotiaters need to consider this issue critically.

Thank you
