REDD without EDD??? Really? It seems a bit hypocritical of Australia to seek forest-based carbon reduction credits from countries like Indonesia as tradeable offsets, when Australia does not include carbon emissions from its own domestic forestry sector in its natonal emissions accounting. Australia has not signed up to Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol, which accounts for forest management carbon emissions. As such Australia wants Indonesina to reduce emissions that are not recognised as emissions in Australia... The Rudd government has also sought to backtrack on its election promise of prohibiting trade in illegal timber - the majority of which comes from Indoneisa. You cant have it both ways. Buying illegal timber and carbon credits you dont recognise to be credits just sounds like an effort to shift the burden of climate change mitigation onto developing countries while polluting as usual... Is that the idea? All countries wanting to allow forest carbon trading under the UNFCCC MUST sign up to accounting forest management carbon emisssons in their domestic accounting in the replacement to the Kyoto Protocol. There cannot be REDD without EDD.
